Estonian Academy of Sciences elected Birute Klaas-Lang as Researcher-Professor of teaching the Estonian language

The Estonian Academy of Sciences elected University of Tartu Professor of Estonian as Foreign Language Birute Klaas-Lang as Researcher-Professor of teaching Estonian language for 2023–2024.

In the transition to Estonian-language education, it is important to find out why some parents of Russian-speaking children prefer their children to learn in Russian. This is exactly what Birute Klaas-Lang intends to do during her professorship, and propose possible solutions to the problem.

“Surveys so far show that many parents with Russian as their dominant language have a negative attitude towards the transition to Estonian-language education. However, the results do not reveal the root causes of the parents' fears and problems, and therefore it is not possible to mitigate these fears and offer possible solutions to the problems. But parents and the family as a whole are an important support and motivator in acquiring the Estonian language,” says Professor Birute Klaas-Lang.

Professor Birute Klaas-Lang, the University of Tartu and the Estonian Academy of Sciences will sign the tripartite agreement at the Academy's General Assembly on 19 April.
